Award-winning celebrity South Africans, Chef Shaun and Caryn Smith, brought the delicious flavours of South African cuisine to Shandrani Beachcomber from 4 to 14 July 2022.
The celebrity couple ran artisan training sessions, and masterclasses with guests and hosted a Gala Dinner.
Shaun Smith is a culinary educator, international judge, chef school principal, restaurateur, food scientist and molecular gastronomist. His wife, Caryn, is acclaimed in her own right as a Maitre Rôtisseur and Commandeur in the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a pastry lecturer specialist, a Worldchefs judge, innovation chef and the co-principal of the Fusion Cooking School in Durban.
During their time on the island, Shandrani Beachcomber guests enjoyed interacting with the chefs and learning how to create famous South African dishes in the masterclasses; learning how to cook the rainbow nation’s diverse cultural specialities such as Cape pickled fish, bobotie, biryani, vetkoek, pap en sous, potjie, melktert and more.
The South African-inspired Gala Dinner was so popular that Shandrani Beachcomber will now offer a Pan-African buffet regularly.
Beachcomber artisans also got to upskill their diverse portfolio of culinary skills by learning more about South African cuisine in two artisan training sessions. Beachcomber resorts welcome many South African guests so this was a valuable addition to our artisans’ techniques to delight visitors who might be craving a taste of home.
Shandrani’s six eateries offer a wealth of dining options and cuisines to appeal to guests from around the world. Now, guests will have even more choice with the option to feast on the tastes of South Africa when enjoying their holiday in Mauritius.
